In 1938 Manhattan, where magic is practically forgotten, young Tommy Black lives in an apartment with his reclusive grandfather. Until one day on a walk to their favorite restaurant they are attacked by ominous shadow creatures. Shocked to find out that his grandfather is a formerly famous archmage that wields a magical artifact, Tommy is tasked by his grandfather to escape with this artifact—the seemingly useless Staff of Light.

A full cast fantasy, season one follows Tommy as he finds new friends and discovers a world where magic is emerging anew, with the mightiest magic coming from a frightening illusionist in Germany, who is rumored to be able to sway people to his will with his voice.
