Rebecca Kopycinski

My name is Rebecca Kopycinski (she/her/hers), and I am a classically-trained singer/composer, as well as a self-taught filmmaker and multimedia performance artist working in Somerville, Massachusetts. My current creative focus is an ever-expanding dystopian storyworld that unfolds through a series of multi-platform "Episodes." While each of these Episodes stands alone narratively, together they weave together the serialized saga of one protagonist, Reagan Esther Myer, across an sprawling post-apocalyptic timeline set in the mid-1990s. At the center of this world is ThotBot, a government-mandated brain implant program instituted by a totalitarian regime known as The ULTRA, a group that seized control after Impact, an apocalyptic event that occurred on June 21, 1995. I’m working to make sense of the current chaotic world from the safety of this dystopian creation, exploring how themes of personal/collective trauma & memory/emotions/identity intersect with class disparity/imbalanced power structures/misinformation, and systemic injustice. I mean, it IS speculative fiction; it's easy to rip apart everything shitty about OUR society through the lens of this make-believe storyworld (and I do).
